NieR: Automata is an Action-RPG published by Square Enix. Although focused primarily on hack-n-slash combat, the game also features shoot-em-up gameplay sections. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity went extinct, NieR: Automata depicts a conflict between androids – who were created by humans a very long time ago – and “machines”, a robotic invasion force from outer space. The fighting has been going for millennia, and it doesn’t seem like there’s an end in sight. The game’s extensive story requires multiple playthroughs to fully experience, and features multiple protagonists. Initially, you will play as combat android YoRHa 2B and her reconnaissance-focused companion 9S, but will unlock another playable character later. Though the main quest of the game is fairly linear, the player’s actions do have an effect: the story can conclude in five different ways. There are also “alternate” endings, 21 in total, that end the story prematurely (most of these are bad endings). NieR: Automata released in 2017 on PS4, Xbox One, and Windows PC.
