Honkai Impact 3rd is an action game in anime style. The game is developed by miHoYo Limited, the same people that brought you Genshin Impact – indeed, the games share some similarities.
Gameplay-wise, Honkai is primarily focused on melee combat (“hack-n-slash”) while also incorporating elements of other genres such as social simulator. The player controls one character in a team of three and can switch between them at any time. Each character has their own, unique skills, and can be further customized by equipping items and “Stigmata”. As not all characters are equipped to fight all enemies, tactically switching between them is required to play efficiently. The game also includes several minigames that are significantly different in gameplay – for example, there is a platforming minigame.
But there’s more to Honkai Impact than the gameplay. The game has a fairly complex story about monsters called Honkai. These monsters come to Earth whenever the humanity gets too technologically advanced with the goal of wiping out their progress. Several organizations have sprung up to combat Honkai – the one most central to the plot is Schicksal – the faction that that fights using Valkyries (the characters that the player controls on missions).
Originally a smartphone exclusive available only on Android and iOS, Honkai has since been ported to Windows due to popular demand. And although it did not receive a Mac port, there are still several ways to play Honkai Impact 3rd on Mac.
