Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit is the latest installment in the popular horror game series, Five Nights at Freddy’s. Developed by Mega Cat Studios, Into the Pit provides yet another terrifying glimpse into the world of mysterious fast food restaurants. In a curious departure from the usual 3D style, Into the Pit is a side-scrolling game done in a pixel art style. This move was clearly popular with the fans, as the game quickly achieved an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam. The game’s protagonist, Oswald, feels a bit bored of living in a small rural town. This sentiment, however, is soon abandoned when he gets transported into the past and becomes a target for violent animatronics. If that sounds a bit vague, sorry! The story is quite good, and we wouldn’t want to spoil it… but it’s also true that not everything gets explained at the end. But hey, if you are a FNaF fan, you’re used to that already. Sword of Convallaria is a free-to-play JRPG game developed by XD studio. The game takes place in the country of Iria, which is plagued with both internal instability and tensions with other governments. The player – who is a mercenary leader – will be tasked with commanding their troops in tactical combat, as well as fulfilling strategic military objectives. Thanks to its charming pixel art style and great soundtrack, Sword of Convallaria is a joy to play; the gameplay itself, of course, is even more important. The game currently has two game modes, although the developers have also promised to add a third one later. The first one, “The Fool’s Journey”, is generally very easy and serves as a tutorial for the game. The second mode, “Spiral of Destinies”, is much better; it features complex tactical stages reminiscent of Disgaea and Fire Emblem as well as many snippets of intriguing world-building. Furthermore, this mode doesn’t have gacha progression mechanics, so it’s quite enjoyable even for F2P players. Stormgate is a real-time strategy game developed by Frost Giant Studios. Set in a universe that blends sci-fi and fantasy, the game tasks you with defending Earth from an alien invasion. The aliens – who suspiciously resemble angels and demons from Christian mythology – are also divided, fighting each other as well as you. Unfortunately, these lovely chaps do not have their own campaigns yet, but you’ll have the opportunity to control them in multiplayer. Since online play is a big part of any RTS game, the developers of Stormgate put a lot of effort into creating not one, but several multiplayer modes. One of them removes hero units entirely, allowing the old-fashioned players to compete with each other. Another one is a 3v3 mode with a unique mechanic that stops any given player from being entirely wiped out. And there’s also a cooperative mode, which allows two players to play through the campaign together. Since Stormgate was designed to be a free-to-play experience from the very beginning, the barrier to entry is very low. Anyone can download the game and simply start playing… however, Mac players face an additional complication. Fallout: London is a total conversion mod for Fallout 4, created by Team FOLON. As you may be able to infer from the name, it provides a uniquely British take on post-apocalypse. Although some believe that Fallout games should only be set in America, others would find this unofficial change of setting quite refreshing and enjoyable. As a total conversion mod, Fallout: London is massive in scope, featuring an entirely new world map and story campaign. The story itself is rather complicated – something that can not be said about Fallout 4 – as it features a conflict between seven different factions. These include the remnants of the British government, a criminal syndicate, an order of knights inspired by King Arthur, and a secretive organization which is rumored to control everything from the shadows. Other aspects of the game – such as most in-game items, radio stations, and music tracks – have also been replaced to suit a British aesthetic. Since Fallout: London is a mod for Fallout 4, it is only playable on Windows PC. Although PlayStation and Xbox versions of the game do, in fact, support mods, Fallout: London is simply too big for these platforms. EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 6 is a third-person shooter game developed by SANDLOT. It features a simplistic story about fighting giant alien monsters, with both fights and cutscenes that are intentionally over the top. Though this may disappoint people who play games for their plot, the end result is actually very fun. Every mission in the campaign is clever – not story-wise, but from a gameplay perspective. The objectives are all meaningfully different from each other and new enemies are carefully introduced to make sure the game never feels stale. This feat is especially impressive when you consider that Earth Defense Force 6 features more than a hundred missions in total, and that some of them also change on higher difficulty levels. There’s a lot of content in the game; if you wanted to, you could easily sink hundreds of hours into it. But, because of the game’s massive size, some of the corners have been cut. EDF frequently re-uses assets, and there was no room in the budget for luxuries like making a Mac version. Norland is a colony simulator game developed by Long Jaunt and published by Hooded Horse. Drawing clear inspiration from RimWorld, the developers put their own spin on it – a strongly medieval aesthetic. As such, the society is Norland is divided into two groups, nobles and peasants. And – here’s a twist – you can’t directly control peasants. You can control nobles, and nobles can issue orders telling peasants what to do, but they will not always obey these orders. It is thus essential to keep your peasants happy, or at least terrified, to ensure their compliance. They do most of the work, after all. Nobles themselves also need management, but of a different kind. They can conduct research by reading books, lead armies, and court other nobles for marriage. It’s all very grounded… unlike many “medieval” games, this one does not feature magic of any kind. Unfortunately, there are other things Norland doesn’t feature, like the macOS version. It’s hard to blame an Early Access game for not supporting Mac, of course, but it’s disappointing nonetheless. Dungeonborne is a multiplayer dungeon crawler game developed by Mithril Interactive. The game resembles an “extraction shooter”, except it is set in a fantasy world. Therefore, you will not see any actual guns in the game; the niche of long-range combat is occupied by bows and spells. And for close-ranged combat, of course, there are swords, axes, and knives. There are many other weapons in the game as well – as this is just a brief overview – which also feature tons of modifiers. The builds can thus get complex, and looting becomes incredibly satisfying. Loot isn’t the only thing that determines your build, either; Dungeonborne features eight distinct classes. There are your typical melee-focused classes like Fighter and Rogue, support classes like Priest, and magic-based classes like Pyromancer. Compared to Dark and Darker, Dungeonborne is more fun, more engaging, and extremely friendly towards f2p players! That’s right, you can play this game without paying a dime, and you wouldn’t even be restricted in any meaningful way. There’s only one catch: the game doesn’t have a native macOS version.
