Escape the Backrooms is a horror game developed and published by Fancy Games. It shouldn’t be confused with Inside the Backrooms; even though they share the same setting and have a similar premise, these are two different games. As the name suggests, you will be exploring the Backrooms, a strange dimension that looks like an empty office. This can be done either alone or as a team of up to four players. Currently, Escape the Backrooms features 20 hand-crafted levels, 12 monsters which must be avoided in different ways, and several unique mechanics. For example, you or your teammates may randomly pass through walls or fall through the floor, ending up somewhere else entirely. The unfortunate survivor will then have to find their way back to where they were. This is especially difficult in multiplayer, since voice chat is proximity-based. Overall, Escape the Backrooms is fun, scary, and immersive. It offers great value for the price, so why not check it out? Sure, it doesn’t have a Mac version, but there are ways around that. RoboCop: Rogue City is a first-person shooter developed by Teyon, a Polish game studio. In this game, you will uphold the rule of law through liberal use of guns and explosives. And don’t worry about destroying public property; it’s Detroit, it can’t get any worse. As an elite cybernetic officer, you will not be dealing with petty crimes. Leave parking tickets and jaywalking fines to your fleshy counterparts! You’re busy uncovering a shadow organization instead. The story of Rogue City is not fully linear. You can approach your missions in multiple ways; some may have worse outcomes. Still, this is a shooter, not an RPG. Your primary concern will be weapon and armor upgrades, not “choices and consequences”. And there are a lot of weapons! The iconic Auto-9, combat shotgun, assault cannon, and about a dozen of other weapons can all be used to deadly effect. You can even throw motorbikes at your enemies. For The King II is a roleplaying game developed by IronOak Games, a Canadian studio. Taking inspiration from tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons, this game will have you controlling a party of four characters, roll dice, and move around on a hexagonal grid. There’s also a co-op mode, in which each player controls one party member. Whether you play with friends or alone, you’ll be traversing the realm of Fahrul on a quest to dethrone tyrannical Queen Rosomon. But although the end goal stays the same each playthrough, the details do not. Most of Fahrul is procedurally generated, greatly enhancing the game’s replayability. It’s worth noting that it takes approximately 30 hours to beat For The King II once; even if you don’t want to bother with multiple playthroughs, it still offers good value for its price. Stronghold: Definitive Edition is a real-time strategy game developed and published by FireFly Studios. It is a remake of the original Stronghold game that was developed in 2001. The game is set in the historical setting of medieval England. Not all is well in the kingdom of Albion; the corrupt nobles plot against their king, violent clashes occur on a daily basis, hunger and pestilence are common. You will be tasked with saving this failing nation, defeating treasonous nobles and defending your own strongholds. Alongside warfare, you’ll have to consider your economy; the game features plenty of city-building aspects. The Definitive Edition in particular features improved graphics and soundtrack, ten additional scenarios, and one entirely new campaign. Of course, old campaigns can be played as well. The developers did not remove anything from the game – with one prominent exception. The original Stronghold was available on both Windows and MacOS, but the Definitive Edition is restricted to Windows only. Quite disappointing. Planet of Lana is a puzzle-platformer game developed by Wishfully. The main selling point of the game is its emotional story. A young girl named Lana lands on an alien planet, inhabited both by wildlife and hostile machinery. Despite this unwelcoming environment, Lana cannot afford to retreat; she is on a quest to rescue her abducted sister. She is accompanied by an intelligent cat-like animal called Mui, who will help Lana move around and solve certain puzzles. But neither Lana nor Mui are capable of combat; the player is expected to sneak by the enemies, or devise routes that bypass them. Though Planet of Lana is not a particularly long game, it is a very beautiful one. All artwork in the game have been painted by hand, resulting in a vibrant, visually rich 2.5D art style. Officially, Planet of Lana can be played only on Windows computers and Xbox game consoles. No other platforms are supported. The Mortuary Assistant is a horror game developed by DarkStone Digital and published by DreadXP. You play as Rebecca, the eponymous assistant in charge of embalming dead bodies. That, by itself, is a fairly simple job; the hard part is dealing with demonic forces which possess some of the bodies. Thankfully, it’s not too difficult to identify the possessed corpses, as long as you’re thorough. Try to rush your job, however, and there will be no Rebecca anymore. Unfortunately, you cannot afford to always take your time either; being around dead bodies weakens your mind and leaves you more susceptible to the demonic influences. Sometimes, corners will have to be cut. Balancing these two things is the core part of gameplay, which is also responsible for the game’s tense atmosphere. The Mortuary Assistant may not be a particularly long game, but it has five different endings and some hidden content, which make it worth playing (and then replaying). ZERO Sievert is a top-down shooter game developed by CABO Studio and published by Modern Wolf. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, this game puts you in a shoes of a scavenger; you will be combing through the ruins of the old world for anything that might be valuable. Fortunately for you (and unfortunately for our character), this task is a lot less boring than it sounds. Raiders may decide that your gear ought to be theirs, while mutants may decide to have you for dinner. In both scenarios, the answer to the problem will be your trusty gun. There are 35 different guns in the game, and more than a hundred weapon mods that change how they behave. So no matter what playstyle you prefer, you’ll be able to have a weapon that’s truly yours. All maps in ZERO Sievert are procedurally generated, so you will not be raiding the same place over and over. The layout of buildings, valuables, and threats are all randomized; you will have a new experience every time you step outside the base. Brick Rigs is a physics-based sandbox game focused on vehicles. It was developed and published by Fluppisoft, a creator from Germany. The first part of the game is about building a vehicle. Thanks to a complex editor and thousands of available parts, you can make anything, from a racing car, to a helicopter, and even a tank. Recreate a real-life vehicle or come up with your own design; the possibilities are endless. And if this does not sound fun to you, you can skip the process and download other people’s designs from Steam Workshop. Once you have a working vehicle design – no matter how you got it – you can drive it around, see how it performs, or destroy it via collision. Though the Brick Rigs is a pure sandbox and has no end goal, you can make your own, or compete with your friends in multiplayer. Like many other games, Brick Rigs is available only on Windows. It was developed and published by Brilliant Game Studios, a small gamedev company located in Canada. The game aims to answer questions that all of us had at some point. These scenarios are all very improbable, but Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator 2 allows you to experience all of them. Thanks to a wide selection of units, you will be able to set up these – incredibly strange – fights. It’s worth noting that the game’s engine can handle millions of units at the same time; the developers didn’t call it “epic” for no reason. Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator 2 also features an RTS mode, in which you control one of the armies instead of simply watching them fight. Lunacid is a dungeon crawler game developed and published by KIRA LLC, a small three-person gamedev studio. Inspired by King’s Field and similar retro titles, this game looks quite old-fashioned as well. This is not a bad thing; despite the retro graphics, Lunacid is incredibly atmospheric. It’s eerie, unnerving, and tense… expect to nervously look around, constantly expecting enemies to come from the fog. Sometimes, your fears will be unfounded, but in most cases, you will indeed have to fight. The combat is relatively simple, but not mindless: you’ll need to block, charge your attacks, and use magic spells. Of course, enemies are not the only thing you’ll encounter. There’s plenty of exploration to be done, both to find secrets and simply to get around. Most of your time in Lunacid will be spent in sprawling, claustrophobic tunnels; there’s never an easy path to the exit; you will always have to wander around and explore first. As expected from a small indie studio, KIRA LLC did not release a Mac version of this game. However, it is still relatively easy to play Lunacid on Mac. The guide below lists several methods.
