Persona 3 Reload is a roleplaying game developed by ATLUS. As the name suggests, it is a remake of the original Persona 3 for PlayStation 2. The main story remains largely unchanged – it’s just as dark as it was before – but there’s a significant amount of new content. Yes, Snowbreak’s writing is admittedly a bit weak, but every other aspect of the game is superb. The soundtrack is great, the visuals are stunning, and – most importantly – the gameplay is very engaging. You command a team of three characters, and can quickly switch to play as either of them. Each character has their own skillset, so it’s important to switch according to the situation. But no matter who you’re playing as, you will need to take advantage of cover, line up headshots, and stay mobile. These skills will be especially important during boss fights. However, all of these hulking machines have unique attack patterns and vulnerabilities, so you will have to adapt quite a lot, too. Sys:Celes is a mechanically complex game, and you will need to understand its systems to do well. One such system, GRD, is especially important. GRD is gained by fighting aggressively, and can be used in several ways. By spending one bar of GRD, you can boost your character’s attacks, or dodge an attack that would otherwise be unblockable. And if you manage to max out your GRD meter, you enter a super-powerful “celestial” mode. Of course, your opponent can do that as well, so you have to make sure to get there first. The game’s story revolves around two girls, Resna and Valeria, who are on a journey to investigate a magical comet. Their actions, however, drew the attention of a mysterious group called Polar Night Alchemists, which is how the girls found themselves embroiled in a massive conflict. Combat in Atelier Resleriana appears simple on the surface, as there are only two actions any character can take at any given moment. But don’t be deceived; although fighting mechanics are not complex, they’re not devoid of depth either. Turn order, for example, is very important in this game, and you will need to manipulate it to gain an advantage. There are also many items that you can use, and some of them have pretty interesting effects. Atelier Resleriana is available on iOS, Android, and Windows, but does not support macOS. Although it’s inevitable that any game in this genre will be compared to Pokémon, Cassette Beasts is not just a clone, and can very well stand on its own. Its story is fairly complex and even emotional at times, and it has some innovative mechanics such as monster fusion.
