Those of you sick of World War 2 games, rejoice. Isonzo, a game developed by M2H and BlackMill Games, does something different while staying within the genre of historical shooter. This game, along its companions Tannenberg and Verdun, comprise the WW1 Game Series, giving some attention to this – generally underappreciated by the media – time period. Isonzo in particular is named after the Isonzo river in Italy, a region that saw multiple battles over the course of World War 1. The game does not limit itself to these confrontations, however; it covers most historically important fights on the Italian Front. The mountainous terrain adds an element of verticality, but this is not the only way landscape affects fights in this game. Aiming for realism and accuracy, Isonzo requires its players to maintain cover, either via natural obstacles, or player-placed sandbags. Barbed wire can be placed too; this will slow your enemies down as they have to either circumvent or cut it with wire cutters. Of course, you will find yourself on both sides of this obstacle. With terrain based on real life, six different classes, and many other historically accurate features, Isonzo is a treat for any lover of historical shooters. Project Warlock is a retro-style first-person shooter developed by Buckshot Software. The game’s simplicity and pixelated aesthetic would no doubt appeal to the fans of the original Doom and other shooters of that era. Completely ignoring the trend to make everything open-world, Project Warlock is a linear game featuring 60 levels split into 5 stages. Each stage is vastly different visually, as the protagonist teleports between different realms. The enemies change as well; no need to reuse them when there are 72 types of foes in total. More than three dozen weapons should be enough to dispatch them all, but in case you want more, your character can also cast 8 different spells. Not everything about this game is completely retro, though. With a slight RPG twist, Project Warlock gives its players the ability to customize their character. Not all weapons and spells are available to you immediately; instead you must research them. You will also be able to put points into different abilities and give your character several perks. This offers some replayability value, as there are many different playstyles to try out. Although the game is available on Windows, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One, there is no official way to play it on macOS. FIFA 23 is the newest game in the FIFA game series by Electronic Arts, following FIFA 22. This is quite a long-running series, with the first FIFA game released in 1993, but it will not be called this way for much longer. FIFA 23 is the last game to sell under the FIFA brand; all subsequent games will bear the name “EA Sports FC” instead.
When it comes to gameplay, FIFA 23 has several new – and exciting – features to offer. Perhaps the most notable one of them is the addition of women’s football teams to the game. Before that, the series has only featured male teams. Although understandable – women’s football is not as popular – it is good that this decision was reversed. FIFA 23 also adds a new World Cup mode, with two separate tournaments for men’s and women’s teams. The game’s new HyperMotion 2 technology, meanwhile, promises to make the animations more realistic than ever. Although purely cosmetic, this innovation could improve players’ immersion.
Another very notable addition – likely more notable than women’s teams for some – is cross-platform support in multiplayer. Finally, FIFA 23 players will be able to play with each other even if they’re running the game on different platforms, although the feature is somewhat limited.

Wreckfest is a demolition derby simulation game developed by Bugbear, famous for the FlatOut game series. Considering that the game emphasizes precisely the same aspect of racing as FlatOut games did – destruction – it would not be wrong to consider it a spiritual successor to the series. Wreckfest features both derbies and more traditional racing conduits, as well as a street racing mode; either way, the focus is put on vehicle destruction. By utilizing a soft-body modelling algorithm, the game ensures that cars deform and take damage in a very realistic way. A variety of cars is provided to the player from manufacturers all over the world. Beyond that, Wreckfest offers a very comprehensive system for modifying and upgrading vehicles. You can tune up your engine by giving it some better parts, or you can strap literal iron plates to your car as armor. Go nuts. That said, adding armor to your car would also make it slower and harder to handle; not all modifications are strictly upgrades. And if even this isn’t enough, the game supports modding via Steam Workshop, allowing you to effortlessly add your favorite pizza truck into the game. Metal: Hellsinger, a game developed by The Outsiders and published by Funcom is a rhythm FPS similar to BPM: Bullets Per Minute. That said, although the two games share the same gameplay idea – shots made to the rhythm of music are stronger and thus more efficient – there are several differences as well. One could say that Metal: Hellsinger refines the ideas pioneered by BPM, puts them into a more polished package. Many players struggle to follow the rhythm of the music on top of regular FPS gameplay, and so, the game does its best to ease the strain. Features like (subtle) autoaim, visual cues, and generally forgiving difficulty genuinely make the experience less overwhelming for a newcomer to this niche genre. Those yearning for a challenge, of course, can simply select a higher difficulty level. But quality-of-life features is not the only way in which Metal: Hellsinger demonstrates its polish. The game, in stark comparison with BPM’s procedurally generated levels, features an intense storyline about a vengeful part-demon and eight carefully crafted levels. And while it does limit replayability somewhat, the first-time experience is much better. The game can be played on Windows, PS5, and XBox Series X/S, but lacks official Mac support.
