The Grand Mafia is a base-building game in the criminal style. The player will take on a role of a Mafia Boss, engaging in a variety of illicit activities to overtake other gangs and families. There are many different features in The Grand Mafia – base-building serves as the core of the game, but there’s also PvE and PvP combat to engage in, occasional in-game events to spice things up, and even a dating minigame.
The base-building part is relatively straightforward – to progress, the player will often need to construct or upgrade all sorts of buildings. Many serve a nefarious purpose – for example, the main way to make money in this game are buildings dedicated to counterfeiting. Other buildings, on the other hand, are simply needed for the day-to-day operations of the base and are not illegal by themselves. An infirmary simply heals the wounded people – the fact that they’ve got these wounds in a shootout over drugs is another story.
Combat in The Grand Mafia is relatively simple, though it still has a certain level of depth. The player can recruit three different types of combatants – Bruisers, Hitmen, and Bikers. Vikingard is a mobile game developed by Netease. The developers describe the game’s genre as “casual simulation RPG”, though it is worth noting that the game has strong base-building elements as well. There are many different features and systems in Vikingard beyond that, though. You can collect many Viking-themed characters, train them and equip them with gear. You can also date the characters, though everything will remain strictly family-friendly. Another game mechanic is raising pets – they will provide your tribe with various benefits.
While it is possible to play this game completely alone, joining an alliance is very beneficial. A strong alliance is tremendously useful to its members – but it also takes effort to make your Alliance into a strong one. As alliances compete for limited resources, clashes will inevitably happen – an opportunity to engage in PvP with long-term benefits to the victor.
Player competition doesn’t always have to be serious, however. To spice up the gameplay, Vikingard also has several mini-games that can be played competitively. With significantly lower stakes, mini-games are a game mode that leaves no hard feelings – a good way to make friends in-game.

Empires & Puzzles: Match-3 RPG is a mobile game by the famous studio Zynga. As evidenced by the name, the game is a different spin on the match-3 genre. The main idea is that match-3 mechanics are integrated into a context of a larger game. Empires & Puzzles is a base-building game at its core, where you can gather resources, collect and improve heroes, craft equipment, and – perhaps most importantly – engage in combat.
Combat is simulated with match-3 gameplay – you need to match elements to deal damage, the color of the elements matched determines the type of damage dealt (enemies may be weak or strong against certain types), and the position of the elements on the board determines which enemies take damage in the first place.
The game features both PvE and PvP content. The game’s expansive adventure mode is the main source of PvE combat opportunities – completing it provides the player with resources and other bonuses. Match Masters is a competitive match-3 game by Candivore LTD. Putting a new spin on the tried-and-true formula, Match Masters manages to bring innovation to an otherwise stale match-3 genre. This is accomplished by making the game revolve around PvP (player vs. player, or simply competitive gameplay). Both players share the same board, and take turns. So, for example, if you use your turn to set up a high-value combination, like you would in a normal match-3 game, your opponent will be the one to capitalize on it the next turn, not you! To increase the strategic depth of the game, each player can choose between one out of twenty special powers – called Boosters – that can alter the situation on the board to the player’s advantage. The Boosters need to be charged by combining certain elements – blue stars for the blue player and red circles for the red player – which, given the competitive nature of the game, is not easy. Combining the elements of your opponent does not charge your Booster, but it denies them the opportunity to charge theirs – something both of you will be doing.

Star Trek Fleet Command is a strategy game in the 4X genre – for those unfamiliar, 4X means “eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate”, four major game mechanics that these strategies revolve around. Ace Defender: Dragon War is a tower defense game made by Ace Game International, Limited. In this game, you will have to make strategic and tactical choices, such as devising your approach to offensive and defensive battles, then adapting these approaches to the situation at hand. There are different locations in the game, such as Demon Tower and Ultimate Arena, and they all require different approaches. To make the game more engaging, the developers also added skills to the game. Powerful Ultimate Skills can even turn the losing situation around – but you will have to use them sparingly because of the limits. In the PvP mode, you will also be able to interrupt your opponent’s skills, adding more depth to the game. Buffs, too, can and should be removed – it’s often a way to ensure victory.
So both PvE and PvP modes in the game are challenging and competitive. But not everyone has hours to put into the game, and sometimes you’re just tired and don’t want to engage with complex gameplay. Arena of Valor, also known as Strike of Kings and Honor of Kings, is a game in the MOBA genre developed by TiMi Studio Group. Now, in case you don’t know what MOBA is, it stands for “multiplayer online battle arena” – think DotA or League of Legends. Each player controls a character, known in this game as “a hero”. Characters aren’t all the same, either – players select characters from a roster, and different characters have different abilities (typically geared towards a certain battlefield role). The characters can unlock more skills during a match, and obtain items that improve their strength. This progress however is limited to a single match – improving your heroes every battle is a part of the genre. What is retained between battles is “Rank” – a score that is assigned based on how well you play. Unlocking new characters to play as is also permanent.
Arena of Valor in particular is a mobile game, and so it makes certain considerations to accommodate those playing on the go. Matches, for example, last between 10 and 20 minutes – on the shorter side for MOBA games. It has six different classes: Marksman, Mage, Assassin, Tank, Warrior, and Support. All 108 heroes that Arena of Valor has fit into one of these categories. As players can purchase items during gameplay, however, they can shift the role their character performs towards that of a different class, if they wish.

Fate/Grand Order is a game in the JRPG genre, developed by Lasengle. The gameplay mainly revolves around turn-based combat, while the story is presented in the visual novel style. The game is a part of the Fate franchise, and, as such, shares the setting with highly popular visual novel Fate/Stay Night, light novel Fate/Zero, as well as other Fate works. The players familiar with the franchise will find the game’s basic premise familiar – you are a “Master”, a magician that summons and controls “Servants”, which are legendary figures from the past that are given superhuman powers by their legend. For example, one such Servant is King Arthur, an iconic character to the franchise – who is also female in this setting. Just a quirk of the franchise, I’m afraid.
Each player can obtain as many Servants as they want – however, many are difficult to obtain, requiring either significant in-game effort or a purchase made with real money. And while some people might feel that it’s unfair that one can pay to sidestep all the grind, mechanics like this keep the game free to play. It’s not a paywall either – the whole game can be completed with easy-to-obtain, low-rarity Servants. So there’s no real reason to avoid the game just because of its free-to-play nature – and this very nature is what makes it easy to give Fate/Grand Order a try.

Diablo Immortal, developed by Blizzard Entertainment, is an upcoming game in the MMORPG genre. This sets it apart from other games in the series, as all of them were Action RPGs (though there were multiplayer elements). Now, if this was a game by some other developer, this might’ve been a cause for concern, as creating MMORPGs is a very difficult process that is hard to get right. That said, this is Blizzard Entertainment we’re talking about. They know a thing or two about these games, having created World of Warcraft. This alone is a reason to be optimistic about Diablo Immortal, but for those that want to know more, there’s a lot of information about what the game will be like.
First of all, Diablo Immortal is a smartphone-only game. To that end, certain considerations were taken to ensure the game appeals to mobile audience. The most important one is that the game will be free to play. Those wary of such games should know, however, that the developers intend to make all purchases feel strictly optional, and promise us that the game will not feature an energy system. The game has also been designed to be playable in short bursts of 5-15 minutes at a time -most activities in the game were made to fit this timeframe. But it will still be a Diablo game, grim-feeling and dungeon-focused just like the other games in the series.

Apex Legends Mobile is a free-to-play battle royale game developed by Respawn Entertainment. As the name suggests, it is a mobile version of Apex Legends, with largely the same gameplay and style. It is still an intense, fast-paced shooter where players are grouped into three-person teams. Overall, this makes for a rather different, though still similar game. Even if you’ve played Apex Legends in the past, you might still want to check out the mobile version.
