Shenmue is an action-adventure game created by SEGA. Originally both a console manufacturer and a video game developer, SEGA has stopped making its own consoles in early 00s. In 1999, however, when Shenmue originally released, SEGA was still a console manufacturer – and so this game was a Sega Dreamcast exclusive. Those who could play it, though, were left highly impressed, as Shenmue was very innovative at the time. Not only did it have an open world, it was a sensible, detailed open world. It featured day-and-night cycles and weather events, and the world reacted to those – characters’ routines would change depending on the time of the day, shops would open and close, and so on. This would hardly impress a modern gamer, but back when Shenmue was released, this was unprecedented. The game’s story revolves around Ryo Hazuki, a teenage boy whose father was murdered. He resolves to investigate the mystery. It is up to the player to help Ryo discover clues, practice martial arts, and participate in fights – all to uncover the truth. In 2018, Shenmue, alongside Shenmue II, was ported to Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Apple’s platform was overlooked, but it is still possible to play Shenmue on Mac. Hardspace: Shipbreaker is a game developed by Blackbird Interactive. The premise of the game is relatively simple – the main character is heavily in debt. To repay this near-astronomical amount of money, our protagonist takes on a dangerous, but highly lucrative job, dismantling derelict starships in outer space. Figuring out the correct salvaging strategy is not easy, as the ships contain many dangerous elements such as fuel tanks and numerous electrical components. Accidental explosions, decompression, and other similar complications can seriously complicate your work and turn many expensive ship components into useless junk. This severely impacts your profits – not something you can afford when you’re in massive debt. Do your job poorly, and it will grow due to interest rates. Do your job well, and it will be paid off in no time. To accomplish this, you’re given various different tools – safety gear, a laser cutter, demolition charges, sensors, and more. The story of the game is not its strong point, and has been criticized for its simplicity and political bias. Thankfully, it can be ignored, as the game has a freeplay mode that disables campaign entirely. Another game mode is “timed challenges”, in which, as the name suggests, the player only has a limited amount of time. Though certainly enjoyable, Hardspace: Shipbreaker suffers from a certain flaw, its limited availablity. It can be played only on PS4, Xbox One, and Windows. Kao the Kangaroo is a platforming game created by Tate Multimedia. Though it is the 4th game in the series, it is also a reboot, so playing previous ones is not necessary. As the previous game was released in 2005, it is easy to understand why the developers have made this decision. In Kao the Kangaroo, the players will have to navigate through obstacles in a beautiful environment, collect ducats, and engage in combat with the help of boxing gloves. Overall, it is a very old-fashioned platformer, which will remind older players of titles like Mario 64. Being nostalgic for games of that era is not a requirement to enjoy Kao, mind – this game shines because of its solid and straightforward mechanics, not because of nostalgia it may or may not evoke. The player will have to do more than just jump around in this game, too. The puzzles and the boss fights provide some much-needed variety to the game. Those willing to sink many hours into this game will also not be disappointed – finding all the collectibles is quite a task, and beyond that, there are several secrets to uncover. Responsive controls, enjoyable gameplay, and gorgeous graphics all make Kao the Kangaroo a title worth playing. The game released on Xbox One & Series X/S, PS4 & 5, Nintendo Switch, and, of course, Microsoft Windows. Apple’s macOS is not on the list, however. Enlisted is a multiplayer first-person shooter developed by Darkflow Software. In this World War II-based game each player controls a squad of soldiers. One soldier is controlled by the player directly, while the others are controlled by the computer, but follow the player’s commands. It is also possible to play as a crew of a vehicle – either a tank or a fighter. This is not unusual – military games that are more realism-focused commonly use squad-based gameplay to give the engagements a more appropriate sense of scale.
In another nod to realism, the players are always split into Allies and Axis teams, and can only select soldiers appropriate for their team. This way, you will not see Soviet and 3rd Reich soldiers fighting together, as that would be quite immersion-breaking. The Allied players can choose to play as the Soviet Red Army, British Army, or the US Army soldiers, while the Axis players can play either as Wehrmacht or Royal Italian Army soldiers.
The game has two matchmaking modes, “Squads” and “Lone Fighters”. Squads is the default mode, that works as described above. The Lone Fighters mode is for those who prefer a more traditional FPS experience – in this mode, each player only controls one soldier and not a squad.
Originally an Xbox Series X/S exclusive, the game has since been ported to PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, and Windows. It did not receive a Mac port, but you can still play Enlisted on Mac by following the guide below.
